I was very fortunate that the first house I ever bought, I built brand new back in 2009. I never wanted a brand new house, at least not at that point in my life. I actually was looking for an older home, with lots of character, built around the early 1900s. I narrowed my search to an old established neighborhood in Norfolk, Virginia called Colonial Place.
Filled with lovely homes and friendly neighbors, Colonial Place is surrounded on three sides by water, halfway between downtown Norfolk and Naval Station Norfolk. My favorite part about the neighborhood is the public walking path all along the waterfront and the close proximity to some of the best restaurants Norfolk has to offer.
Most of houses were way beyond my price range and those that came close, needed a lot of work. I had given up hope that I would find an affordable, single family home in my dream neighborhood, when a listing for a lot and home with pre-approved plans to build popped up on MLS. I drove up to see the lot that day after work and immediately put in an offer. Seven long months later, we moved in! Over the course of the next five years, I enjoyed learning the ins and outs of home ownership while tackling a lot of DIY projects to achieve the charm I desired but couldn't afford when building the house.
